St. James The Fisherman Episcopal Church

St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church is a beautiful little church located in the coastal community of Shallotte, NC. They have recently been engaged in the process of finding a new rector to serve their parish. To aid in this endeavor, they realized that they needed a new website to communicate to potential applicants what their congregation was all about. They are friendly and hospitable, but even more than that, they are all about missions, and serving the people of their community. While discerning what information they wanted to include in their site, the church leaders began to realize other benefits that a current website could provide. Not only is it an effective way to reach visitors, but it is also works really well as an “information hub” to keep members aware of current events. Looking toward the future, they have decided to include a way for donations to be made to the church electronically. The style of the site is light and airy. The images are of church members in action and the church facility. In addition, it includes helpful utilities for including an events calendar, sermons, locations and people.

Random Bit is a technology consulting company that specializes in enterprise architecture, solution architecture, process improvement, root cause analysis and turnaround of troubled enterprise wide projects. They promote a culture of integrity, honesty and accountability in execution of our duties and encourage creative problem solving and the expression of ideas in a mutually respectful manner. It was a pleasure working with sisters, Susanne Ungerer and Lori Morrow. Their primary need for a new website design was to reach both employers and business owners, as well as clients seeking new employment. Their logo set the color scheme, as well as overall appearance and feel of the site. Susanne and Lori like the look of images with a lot of light. A specialty feature they requested was a left-side menu with page scroll to each item on the page. They only wanted this on one page, so unlike many sites that have the same basic layout for every page, I had the freedom to mix up the page designs for this one. The result is striking.

First Call Locating

A website is an essential part of a small business strategic plan for growth and success. First Call Locating, is a small business that picks up where county services end. They are the first call after NC811. “We start where 811 Stops” is their slogan. The law requires you to call 811 and have your public utilities marked before you dig. However, public utility companies will only locate the facilities they own (utilities that run meter to main like electric, gas, oil, telephone, and water). So they mark the underground utilities and structures 811 does not. The owner, Russ LeGault, explained what his business goals were, as we mapped out ideas for his website. He provided me with plenty of information for it. He also gave me his business card, with a logo, which established the color scheme and overall look of the site. We also created a Google Business Page for his business, which is vital for an on-line presence.

Trinity German Shepherds

It has been such a joy and pleasure to work with Gena Edwards, owner and founder of Trinity German Shepherds & K9 Training. She is a lovely person, just full of light, who has such passion for what she does. Gena is an expert at training dogs, her specialty being German Shepherds. And now she is also breeding first class shepherds with only the best bloodlines. She loves to take pictures of her dogs, so she gave me a lot of them to choose from for her site. Her site is clean and classy, with a color scheme that sets off the colors of the dogs themselves. Her requirements were to get her business out there, and make clear all of the services she provides. She also needed a page that will constantly be updated with her new dogs and puppies, with links to their pedigree sites. I hope you enjoy visiting Gena’s site!

Mathias Lee began his business, Lee Process Equipment, just a couple of years ago, and is already running full speed ahead. He is a manufacturers representative for eleven companies, covering the three states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. With all of his time and energy focused on meeting with clients, and building up his new business, Mathias needed a website that would keep up with the growing demand. He already had a very good idea of how the site should be set up and what it should include. His primary goals for the site were (1) for strategic SEO to bring potential clients to his page, (2) for it to be responsive, (3) for it to include images that featured some of his past installations, (4) for it to include a list of manufacturers on the home page that linked to individual pages for each one, still on his site, (5) all well as a manufacturers page with logos that linked to the individual manufacturers websites, (6) a page for Case Studies, and (7) a page for Resources. He already had the red, white, and blue color scheme, and a fantastic logo. The site features a full-size slider and just enough parallax on the home page to make it interesting, without being overdone. It is heavy with images and helpful information that should serve him well for now, but with plenty of room for expansion with future growth potential.

Burns, Gray & Gray

Burns, Gray & Gray Law Firm needed a new web site to effectively find their clients. Because of the large number of firms it is a very competitive business, so the search engine optimization was very important, to give them a decent listing. This firm had a very basic version when they decided it was time for a redesign. They have a long list of areas of law that they consult on, so there are a large number of pages under the menu heading, “practice areas”. Also, there are three attorneys, so they each have a page, in addition to the menu page that covers the entire office staff.

Burns, Gray & Gray Website Design

Burns, Gray & Gray is a small, local, family firm that works very hard to help people in their community, so my goal was to represent this in their site. I used the dark colored background to represent the professionalism that they show their clients. This is my family’s business, so they like to get me to make changes often!

Wesleyan Contemplative Order

The Wesleyan Contemplative Order is a non-profit organization based out of Davidson, NC. They have had a website for about ten years, which was kept updated on a regular basis, but was not responsive, and therefore, did not work well on mobile devices. Because the theme had not been updated to allow for small screens, I replaced it with the OceanWP theme. This is a beautiful theme with lots of options, but the primary reason I like to use it is because it is so fast. Speed is important in a website. There are many ways to speed up a site, but there is no way to make up for poor coding in the base theme.

Another feature used on this site is a plugin called Ultimate Member. This plugin allows us to make certain portions of the site available to registered members only. These can be full or partial pages. There are pages for membership registration and login.

Finally, I also included an Events plugin, to allow the description, registration, and payment for special events held by the Wesleyan Contemplative Order. As this organization has grown, they are finding this automated ability is extremely helpful.

Updating a website by changing the theme can make all the difference in the world. It can totally change the way the world sees you, and your business. The WCO shared this response they had by one of their members:
